We’re Burnt Out: The Silent Exhaustion of Young Adults

There is a lie quietly circulating in society that young people are lazy. That we don’t want to work hard, that we give up too easily, that we are entitled. But beneath that accusation lies a deeper truth: we are not lazy we are burnt out.

This generation grew up watching our parents struggle, sacrifice and still barely make it. We were told education was the key, only to graduate into unemployment, underemployment and unstable opportunities. We were encouraged to dream big, yet when those dreams took too long to materialize.

Burnout today doesn’t always look like collapse. Sometimes it looks like showing up every day with no joy. Like scrolling endlessly because your mind is too tired to rest. Like feeling guilty for resting because productivity has become your worth.

Hustle culture sold us the idea that if we are not constantly doing more, we are falling behind. But human beings were never designed to operate like machines. Rest is not laziness. Slowness is not failure. And exhaustion is not a moral flaw.

We don’t need more motivation speeches. We need compassion, sustainable systems and permission to breathe. Until then, many young adults will continue surviving instead of living.
