Why Eating Too Much Carbohydrates Makes Us Tired and Hungry

Why Eating Too Much Carbohydrates Makes Us Tired and Hungry

Definition

Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients in the human diet, along with protein and fat. These molecules contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. They are crucial in our bodies as they provide energy to the body, particularly through glucose, a simple sugar that is found in many basic foods, contain soluble and insoluble elements; the insoluble part is known as fiber, which promotes regular bowel movement, regulates the rate of consumption of blood glucose and also helps to remove excess cholesterol from the body. As an immediate source of energy, glucose is broken down during the process of cellular respiration, which produces ATP, the energy currency of the cell.

Effects of Eating Too Much Carbohydrates

1. Weight Gain

When you eat more carbohydrates than your body needs for immediate energy, the excess glucose is converted into glycogen and stored in the liver and muscles. Once glycogen stores are full, excess glucose is convereted into fats and stored in the body which in turn leads to weight gain. Also, digestions of carbohydrates happens faster, leving the stomach empty, and prompts one to eat more and more, leading to excess fats.

2. Blood Sugar Imbalance

Overconsumption of simple carbohydrates causes rapid sugar rush which can lead to fatique, mood swings and increased hunger and cravings.

3. Type 2 Diabetes

Excess carbs consumption exposes one to incresed risks of type 2 diabetes. This can strain insulin production, increasing the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

4. Dental Problems

Sugary carbohydrates can cause tooth decay and cavities, as bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and produce acid.

5. Fatigue and Low Energy

Although carbohydrates provide quick energy, excess simple carbs can cause blood sugar crashes making you feel tired and sluggish.

Why Eating Too Much Carbohydrates Makes Us Tired and Hungry

Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose and absorbed into the bloodstream faster than other food nutrients, hence does not leave your stomach full for long. This makes you hungry.

When you eat refined or simple carbohydrates, your blood sugar rises quickly. The body responds by releasing insulin to move glucose into cells. This can sometimes cause caues a blood sugar drop afterward, leading to fatique, drowsiness or sluggishnes.

It is important to include alll the food nutrients in your diet, carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins for healthy living. Also remember to drink enough water for digestion.
